The Kuna FFA Chapter held their bi-annual Ag expo Tuesday May 4th – Friday May 7th. The expo was very successful with over 4,000 1st and 2nd grade visitors. The chapter had approximately 45 members who assisted each day to ensure there were individuals to act as leaders, to run videos, pass out ice cream and sanitize after contact with the animals.
The visitors took part in many activities. They examined large animals including cattle, horses, and a donkey. Interaction with the animals was encouraged and the children held and petted goats, wool sheep, meat sheep, pigs, rabbits, chickens, baby chicks, pigeons, ducks, and a goose. Agriculture is more than just animals so they learned about other aspects of agriculture as well. One activity was when they went into the green house and planted watermelon seeds. They also learned about tractors, trees, and oil crops such as mustard and canola. Along with these things they learned the basics of fertilizer and how it assures plants receive all the nutrients they need to produce food. Because many of the visitors had little agricultural background we hope they took away a better understanding of how food goes from the field to the dinner plate.
The Expo was very successful, and we hope to continue this event in the future. We would like to thank all of our sponsors, the members who helped provide the animals and to be leaders, our advisors, and all others who helped our chapter.
